Program Details

The program first opened in 1975 when the Puget Sound HVAC industry started the HVAC program at NSCC to train potential employees. North's instructors have maintained a strong relationship with the region's HVAC employers, which results in a program that tailors student skills to the needs of employers in the region.

North Seattle Community College now offers a special HVAC program that combines HVAC design training with computer technology training. Students will learn how to operate, test, and adjust HVAC systems from their PC. This new program currently offers a certificate, and starting Fall Quarter 2007, an Associate of Applied Science degree in HVAC. Generally, students can complete the certificate in a year and the degree in two years.

Transition to Employment

Specially designed student training is not the only advantage of North's ties to the HVAC community. The HVAC Program's close ties to industry helps students in get their first internships and entry level jobs. Employers such as Lennox, Trane, Carrier, and American Standard appreciate the quality of the training in our program. Companies contact North's instructors directly to arrange interviews with NSCC students. This close-knit relationship between the program, its instructors and industry can be a great advantage when it comes time for a graduate to find a job. Our Alumni Profiles page profiles some of our students' success.

Field Trips

In the past, students have been able to tour facilities such as Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the Museum of Flight, consulting engineering firms and mechanical contracting firms.

In Winter 2001, students were invited on a field trip to the McKinstry company, a leading mechanical construction and engineering firm in the Pacific Northwest with annual sales in the $100,000,000 range. Students were given full access to the facilities. Activities included a tour of the sheet metal shop led by the shop foreman, a question and answer session with a lead engineer, and a cost estimator, and a tour of additional facilities led by a regional salesman and a project manager. These McKinstry employees not only represent years of experience with HVAC systems, but they provided invaluable information for students about the day-to-day work experience in almost every facet of the business.

NSCC's integration with the HVAC community clearly complements the already top-notch education in North's HVAC program. NSCC can help prepare you.
