General Questions
Q: Do I need to take a placement test? A: If you have never taken college-level math and English courses before and plan on earning a degree, you should take the English and math placement tests. Placement test scores determine the beginning level of the English or math sequence for many students. If you have taken college-level English or math, bring your transcripts so that an advisor can review them to determine whether placement tests are necessary. Q: Is it possible to enroll one quarter, "stop-out" for a quarter and then return? A: Yes. Enrollment does not have to be consecutive. Many times students must temporarily withdraw from school because of personal or financial commitments. Students who elect to do this must update their enrollment status at the Admissions and Registration Front Desk Services. Q: How many credits must I enroll for? A: Full-time students usually enroll in 12 to 18 credits. Those wishing to take more than 18 credits per quarter will need permission from an advisor. Students who receive funding for their education (from the VA, Social Security, Financial Aid, etc.) are required to enroll for a specified minimum number of credits, usually twelve. Students should check with their funding source for specific details. Q: How much homework will I have? Will I be able to work and go to school? A: A rule of thumb is that for every hour spent in class, a student should spend two hours outside of class studying, doing research, writing papers, etc. By this formula a student who spends fifteen hours in class a week (15 credits) should be doing thirty hours of homework. While it is possible to work and go to school, there should also be budgeted time for leisure activities. Working full-time and going to school full time is challenging and is not recommended, especially for first time college students. Q: How long will I attend class each day? A: Generally, the number of hours spent in class each week equals the number of credits for which the student is enrolled. For instance, the student enrolled for fifteen credits will probably spend fifteen hours in class each week. There are exceptions. Many courses that have a required laboratory or practicum such as science, art and music will usually require additional class time. Q: Is there a prescribed curriculum that I must follow each quarter? A: Students enrolled in professional-technical programs have a prescribed curriculum to follow. Students working toward the Associate of Arts, Associate of Business or one of the Associate of Science degree options must fulfill the course requirements as specified in the college catalog and on the degree worksheet. Students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university should take those courses that will fulfill the requirements for their transfer major as specified on the four-year college web site and catalog. It is important to make an educational plan with an advisor to be sure that you will fulfill all the degree requirements within your time frame. Q: How do I get transcripts from other colleges? A: To have your classes applied to your work here at North Seattle Community College, you will need to fill out an 'Application for Evaluation of Incoming Credits' to have transcripts sent to the college and evaluated by our Credentials Evaluation staff. You will receive an official evaluation of your transcript in 6-8 weeks. If you have immediate questions about applying classes for prerequisites or required courses that affect what classes you need to register for, you can meet with an advisor (noted in step 2). See Transferring Credits for full details on how to submit courses from other colleges for evaluation. Q: Who will help me plan my schedule? A: Students are encouraged to meet with professional academic advisors in the Advising Center. Advisors in the Advising Center help students develop educational plans and determine which courses transfer to a four-year college or apply toward a professional/technical degree or certificate. Q: What do I do if I need help in a given class and I cannot make my instructor's office hours? A: If you can't make the office hours, arrange another meeting time. Also, NSCC has a number of on-campus tutoring services which include a math lab, computer labs, a writing and grammar language lab, and more. Q: What if I'm not pursuing a degree or certificate? A: If you are NOT pursuing a certificate or degree, you can meet with any advisor for help or advising. See the Advising Center Contact Information for a list of advisors, and for drop-in and appointment information. |
