High School Background

Q: I didn't go right to college after high school. Will I feel out of place?
A: The average age of NSCC students is twenty-nine. Many students at NSCC are in their thirties and above. While older students might find that their study habits are rusty at first, they will quickly discover their great capacity to learn. Older students also often demonstrate a more sincere commitment to learning, as they are interested in improving their position in the work force.

Q: I want to go to college but I am afraid my skills are too low. Are there classes to help me prepare for college work?
A: North offers preparatory English and math classes and Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes. You need to start with the Compass placement test to establish your level and then the advising staff can help you enroll into an appropriate class.

Q: Do I have to get my GED or high school diploma before I can attend North?
A: You do not need to have either a high school diploma or a GED to attend North.  However, before taking college-level classes, take the Compass placement test to be sure your skills are at a high enough level to succeed.  Not having a high school diploma or GED might mean choosing courses for your transfer degree more carefully.

A: The Testing Center offers some sections of the GED exam every month.  Contact the Testing Center for more information.  If you are 19 or younger you will need a release signed from your high school or school district.

Q: What is the process for becoming enrolled in ESL classes?
A: For ESL students who are new to North, you should start by contacting the Admissions and Registration Office to fill out an application. You should then go directly to the Testing Center to take the ESL placement test. If you are a beginner at English, you should come directly to the Advising Center to fill out an application. Students will then be contacted by mail a few weeks before the start of the next quarter and invited to an orientation. At the orientation students will be registered into available classes. These classes are only available to students with permanent resident status in the US. Please note that the ESL classes are in high demand and some students may have to wait an additional quarter before receiving a class. Contact Stephanie Swanson  Phone.  206-527-7303 for more information.
