Work Study programs give students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience while earning money for college. Both on-campus and off-campus positions are available. Remember: Work Study funds are earned by the student throughout the quarter, so the money is not available at the beginning of the quarter for paying tuition and fees. Available positions are posted on the bulletin board outside of the Financial Aid Office and also online. Work Study eligibility is determined by the Financial Aid Office after students have completed the financial aid process. Please visit the Work Study page (http://www.northseattle.edu/enroll/finance/wstudy/) for more information. Please visit our Scholarships site to search for available scholarships, get tips on how to apply, and other information that will help you succeed! Every scholarship has its own set of criteria that a student must meet in order to be eligible. Many scholarships can be found posted on the bulletin boards outside of the Financial Aid Office. Online searches are also effective using search engines such as FastWeb.com. Besides these outside (private) scholarships, North Seattle Community College also offers scholarships through the Education Fund. Applications are available at the beginning of the year and are due the last day of April. Please visit www.northseattle.edu/edfund/scholars.htm for more information, or contact Matt Ayer
Local Assistance/ Scholarships are also available through Seattle Milk Fund, Assistance League of Seattle, and WA Women in Need. They have individual criteria for eligibility and have varying deadlines throughout the year.
The International Programs office offers a limited number of scholarships for International Students. Application deadlines are March 1, August 1, and December 1. There is no deadline for the Referral and Early Acceptance scholarships.
North Seattle Community College DOES NOT participate in Federal Student Loan programs (Direct/ FFELP Stafford Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans or PLUS Loans). NSCC does have a Perkins Loan program. No application is necessary for this loan. If you are eligible, the Perkins Loan will be offered to you along with any other financial aid on your Award Notification. If it is not awarded to you, you can always submit a written request to have your file reviewed for Perkins Loan eligibility. There is limited money available for this program, so there is no guarantee that you will receive the loan. There are many organizations, banks, and credit unions that offer non-federal student loans (often called Alternative Loans). These types of loans generally require students to have good credit and a steady source of income, or to provide a co-borrower who does. Depending on the type of loan, a student may be required to make payments while in school. North Seattle Community College does not endorse any lender. Students are encouraged to research credit unions and other banks before making a final decision.
Individuals who are currently receiving Washington State unemployment benefits, those whose benefits have been exhausted within the last 24 months, displaced housewives (have been working in the home, but experienced a significant loss of income and need to re-enter the work force), self-employed students whose business has been closed due to an economic downturn, or those who have received a WARN letter may be eligible to receive financial assistance under this program. Please visit the Worker Retraining (http://www.northseattle.edu/wrp/) site for more information.
The Office of Veteran's Affairs serves veterans, reservists, active duty personnel and eligible family members who receive Veteran's Administration education benefits. It also verifies the State of Washington Vietnam-Service and Persian Gulf tuition reduction for eligible veterans.
