Choosing Classes
Having trouble deciding which courses to take your first quarter? Here are
some suggestions:
-
Take English and math.
- English and math are required for all of our college transfer degrees and many professional/technical degrees.
- If you test into either developmental (pre-college level) English or math, taking a class in that subject will help strengthen your skills and will better prepare you for future coursework.
Take something you're interested in.
- If a class looks interesting to you take it! Exploring different interests is a great way to sample our course offerings. For example, if
you're interested in history, take a history class. If you're interested
in different cultures, you might want to take an anthropology class. Go ahead
and explore and follow your interests!
Begin a sequence.
- Some majors require you to take a sequence of classes. For instance, a
pharmacy major must take Chemistry 140, 150 and 160.
Start with On-campus Classes
- Distance Learning courses (courses done primarily over the Internet, with
little or no on-campus attendance required) can be challenging for first-time
college students. We recommend that you take on-campus courses your first
quarter.
Additionally, students pursuing a transfer degree may consider some of the
following transfer degree requirements:
Consider a foreign language.
- Many four-year colleges require you to have taken a foreign language in order to be admitted.
Take your Integrated Studies Requirement.
- Your Integrated Studies requirement can fulfill other requirements within
your Associate of Arts degree at the same time, so taking it your first quarter
can give you a good start on your degree. Visit the Integrated
Studies website for more information
Before you register for your classes, we recommend that you meet with an advisor. Whichever classes you choose, remember to keep it manageable by not overloading yourself.
