Tips for Success

Now that you're about to begin classes at North Seattle Community College, here are some tips to help your experience at NSCC become a successful one.

Tip #1: Manage your time
You should plan to spend about two hours doing homework for every credit hour spent in class. So, for example, if you are taking fifteen credits (fifteen hours per week) this quarter, plan to spend about thirty hours a week on homework outside of class. Of course, some courses you may need to spend more than this, and some courses less, but you should expect at least two hours of homework per each hour in class.

Tip #2: Participate in class
Students who are actively involved in the classroom are often more successful at NSCC than those who don't. We strongly encourage you to ask questions, meet with your instructor during office hours, and to collaborate with your fellow students. Many of our courses will require you to work in groups with your peers; it is your responsibility to make sure you understand the requirements and expectations of the group you are in.

Tip #3: Register for classes early
This can't be overemphasized! Many classes fill up early, and there's no guarantee that once a class is full you will be able to get in. Also, many classes may be offered only once a year, so register at the earliest possible date you can. You will be much more likely to get the classes you want, at the time you want them.

Tip #4: Make your drops official
If you are registered for a class, but are unable to attend it, you must officially drop the class from your schedule. Failure to drop classes may result in a failing grade, a decreased chance of acceptance to a four-year college, reduction in financial aid and may affect your enrollment at North. Read the Add/Drop Policy.

Tip #5: Make a plan that you keep with you
We strongly encourage you to make an educational plan. After you make your educational plan, be sure to read it, understand it, and hold onto it. Your educational plan is basically your road map to success. Without it you won't know which direction you need to follow, so make sure that you hold onto your plan and bring it with you each time you meet with an advisor. To learn more, visit the Advising Center's Educational planning page.

Tip #6: See your Advisor often
We strongly encourage you to see your advisor often. Degree requirements at NSCC, as well as major and admission requirements to four-year colleges and universities, change often. In the Advising Center you will have access to the most updated information. In addition, we also have information on upcoming college transfer events, college fairs, and other related campus events. Seeing your advisor regularly, and making an Educational Plan, are the best ways to stay on track and ensure successful completion of your program of study at North.
