- BUS169 or IT101.
- Students must be advised in the Division/Medical Assisting dept., initiate
a student file and pay the program application fee prior to registering
for any classes in the program. Test scores or transcripts, a completed
WSP background check,
application and an attestation of computer skills must be available to
initiate a file. Forms are available in an advising packet in the division.
- A physical exam by the student's physician, up-to-date immunizations,
a TB test within one year, and
starting (or waiving) the HepB series
are all required prior to taking hands-on courses where students practice
on each other and/or work with body fluids.
- Completion of CPR
(Healthcare Provider or higher) is required prior to externship. Red Cross
First Aid is recommended, although the program includes a course in "Office Emergencies."
- Students are required to wear uniforms/scrubs in the exam room and clinical
classes and on externship (as required by the externsite).
- During the final quarter in AMA290, students will work in an assigned clinic/medical office for a total
of 198 hours in an unpaid and supervised externship capacity. Students must
plan ahead and make necessary arrangements in order to extern full-time day
shifts. It is very difficult to locate evening and/or part-time externships.
- Normal vision (corrected okay), hearing, hard/finger dexterity, and ability
to be on feet are physical requirements to perform the typical duties of
a Medical Assistant.
- Students are provided liability insurance by the college at no cost to
the student. Health insurance will be the student's responsibility.
- Students will need specified supplies for hands-on practice, and additional
supply fees are added to tuition for certain classes.
- In addition to program courses, students will need to take BUS236 - Interpersonal Communications for the Workplace.
- ENGL&101 or ENGL&230, and MATH100.
- Students will need to complete a lot of reading and writing. Students
will need self-motivation, time management skills and must put forth effort
to interact with other students and instructors.
