The Nursing Assistant Certificate program provides instruction
in basic nursing care skills, including: CPR,
HIV/AIDS,
and clinical training in a long term care facility.
After successful completion of the Nursing Assistant Program, students are
eligible to sit for the State of Washington Nursing Assistant examination for
State certification. Students receiving their certification will be eligible
to apply for employment in a long term care nursing facility, hospital, or
community health agency.
Course objectives are based on the laws of Washington State that govern the certification and practice of Certified Nursing Assistants in Washington State. More information about state requirements is available from the Department of Health website and the DSHS website. This program also has an I-BEST option.
Participation Requirements
- 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or GED
- Clear criminal background check
- Proof of up-to-date immunizations and TB test
- Attendance at mandatory Nursing Assistant Orientation
Prerequisites

English095, 096 (equivalent or higher), or a satisfactory English placement
test score taken within the last 3 years:
- CASAS: 220 minimum (reading and listening scores)
- COMPASS: 40 minimum on the reading portion
- Submission of on-site writing sample related to Nursing Assistant program
- Attendance at a Nursing Assistant Information Session
- Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently as assessed by interview with an English specialist (On occasion, students may be asked to interview with an English specialist to further assess English listening and speaking skills.)
Admission
- Priority for admission will be given to Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL) and/or Workforce Education students. The program's intent is to assist students in progressing along a career pathway to obtain immediate employment.
- This program is funded in part by a grant awarded under the President's Community-Based Job Training Grants, as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment & Training Administration.

Throughout this program of study the importance of a responsible and professional work ethic is stressed. Factors leading to such a work ethic are identified and discussed. Instruction is also provided in effective leadership and how it enhances the work environment. Input from this program's industrial advisory committee is essential to curriculum content pertaining to the work ethic and leadership as well as the technically oriented curriculum.
Safety and industrial hygiene are included throughout the curriculum through lectures and actual demonstrations of safe laboratory techniques.
