In order to qualify for the Pharmacy Technician Program, you must follow the three steps for approval below: Procedure for
Approval, Requirements for Approval, and Placement on the Approval List. Applicants who meet the approval requirements will
be placed on a list for the next available quarter that space is available. Currently a new class begins each fall and spring
quarter.
Procedure for Approval
- Make an appointment with the Testing Center for assessment testing, or
- Obtain transcripts of college credits that would adequately provide evidence of college level English and math proficiency.
NOTE: If tested in the NSCC Testing Center, applicants are tested with the Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test, submit a
writing sample for English placement, and complete a basic algebra placement exam.
- Please come to the Health and Human Services Division. Applicants must bring test scores or transcripts. To have information mailed to you, please call

Requirements for Approval
- Must provide evidence of high school completion or GED equivalency.
- If testing is done, applicant must place into ENGL&101 and MATH098.
- Applicant must complete a personal information form, listing references and permission to contact the references.
- A typing proficiency of 35 WPM accurate straight copy is recommended for program approval. Graduates should
expect to type at 45 WPM minimum to meet most employers' expectations.
- On occasion, students may be asked to be interviewed by an English specialist to assess verbal skills adequate for the
program.
Placement on Approval List
In addition to the English and Math prerequisites described above, placement on the program approval list will be done after
appropriate responses are received on a personal data/attestation form, as explained in the following:
Past conduct could impact future licensure under Washington State Department of Health, Board of Pharmacy rules. RCW
18.64A.050 paragraphs (2) & (3) identifies grounds for refusal, suspension, or revocation of the pharmacy technician
certificate.

- "He or she has been found guilty of any offense in violation of the laws of this state relating to drugs, poisons,
cosmetics or drug sundries by any court of competent jurisdiction".
- (RCW-paragraph 3)
- "He or she is unfit to perform his or her duties because of habitual intoxication or abuse of controlled substances".

Due to student and patient safety concerns, a delay in program entry may be necessary to ascertain adequate physical and
mental health to meet employer's expectations for pharmacy technician.

Evaluation of Achievement (during the three-quarter program) INCLUDES:
- Written and oral exams
- Class, laboratory and clinical assignments
- Clinical performance
- Professional behavior
- NOTE: Once students begin taking courses required for the Pharmacy Technician certificate they must:
- Maintain a 2.0 GPA overall minimum average.
- Receive no less than a 1.8 grade to pass any required class.
- Understand that a grade below 1.8 will require that the student repeat the course.
- No course may be repeated more than once without faculty approval.
- Receive a 2.0 grade in PHA170 (complete all first quarter subjects) and receive faculty approval before
placement into a clinical site.
- Must maintain a satisfactory clinical evaluation to continue on in the program.
NOTE: The grading scale is on page 10 of the 1998-2000 Seattle Community College Catalog. Students are
encouraged to obtain a copy or review a library copy as it pertains to college requirements, student services and
student responsibilities.
