Steps to Begin
Track Your Credits
  1. Obtain and read the college brochure about the A.F.A. Degree. If you have any questions regarding the Arts program, contact the Humanities Division.

NOTE: If you are not yet a North Seattle student, you will need to apply to the school before you can begin any further planning. You must be a student at the school to register for classes, and classes fill up quickly. Follow the College's Steps to Admission.

  1. Obtain, read, and begin to complete the program planning worksheet for the A.F.A. degree. You may obtain these program planning worksheets from your art, theater, or music instructor, or the Arts, Humanities & ABE Division.

  2. After you have filled out the program planning sheet, by relying on actual transcripts of your courses here and elsewhere, make an appointment with your art, theater, or music instructor. (All of the full-time art, theater, and music instructors are advisors.) You need to talk with a faculty advisor early in your study so that you know which courses you must take in order to receive a degree or certificate.

NOTE: Transfer Students have a few extra steps to complete if they want their past coursework to apply to their studies at North Seattle Community College. (If you are not a transfer student, skip to #4.)

    1. If you have transferred to NSCC from another college/university and wish to have credits from other colleges apply to your A.F.A. degree, you must request official transcripts to be sent to the Records Office at NSCC. You need to request official transcripts from each college/university you have attended where credits will apply to the A.F.A. degree.

    2. In approximately two weeks, check with the Records Office to see if your transcripts have arrived.

    3. Once the Credentials Office has received your request for evaluation of incoming credits, the evaluation will be processed as soon as possible. A copy of the Degree Audit (Student Report of Academic Progress) for your program will be mailed to you. Evaluation of incoming credits can be delayed at the end of each quarter due to processing graduation applications.

  3. When you have completed 30 credits toward the Associate of Fine Arts, make an appointment to see the head of the Art Department so your academic progress can be evaluated and a graduation plan can be mapped out for graduation. You will need to bring a current Degree Audit of the A.F.A. degree, copies of transcripts from other colleges/universities, and a copy of your "Application for Evaluation of Incoming Credits" form, if applicable, and your completed program planning sheet.

  4. When you meet with the head of the Art Department, certain courses for the A.F.A. degree may be waived or courses taken from another college/university may be substituted for credits needed in the A.F.A. degree. An Academic Action Form can be obtained from the Humanities Division or from the front counter of the Admissions/Registration office. Fill out the Academic Action Form and have the department head approve the academic exceptions. The Academic Action Form will be sent to the Credentials Office to adjust your official academic record for graduation.

Do not forget that you will need to apply for graduation. When you have registered for your last quarter's classes, obtain the Application for Graduation from the Credentials Office. See the Graduate Preparation info for details.
