AFA Degree: Music

Track Your Credits
Candidates for the Associate of Fine Arts degree in Music must complete at least 94 credit hours in college transfer-level courses numbered 100 and above with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or better. 15 credits must be earned at North Seattle Community College (NSCC).

The Associate of Fine Arts in Music (AFA) is a degree that allows music majors to obtain not only required transfer courses, but rewards each successful student for their work at NSCC. Presently the AFA is not universally recognized as a transfer degree like the Associate in Arts Degree, but all courses are currently transferable. Many students earn both degrees concurrently. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a music major should consult both the NSCC AA degree requirements and the university or college to which they intend to transfer. All AFA candidates in music must have a music advisor; music advisors are the full-time faculty, Mr. Roupen Shakarian or Mr. Fred Radke.

The AFA: Music requires General Education courses as follows: ENGL&101 and &102; five credits of a U.S. Cultures or Global Studies course, and one of the following computation courses: MATH&107 or above, BUS116, or ACCT110 or above. Students must also complete 15 credits in the 3 Areas of Knowledge, 5 from Visual, Literary, and Performing Arts other than MUSC courses, 5 from Individuals and Society other than the required U.S. Cultures or Global Studies course, and 5 from the Natural World. There are also 54 required and elective MUSC credits. During the final quarter students must present a special performance/project (recital) which will be evaluated by the music faculty; details about the performance may be obtained from the faculty music advisor.
