Media Program Can Transfer to Evergreen
Monday, November 28th, 2005
Students pursuing a 4-year degree in Communication, Business and Media (CB & M) can start at North Seattle Community College and earn their BA at the Evergreen State College, according to an agreement recently reached between the two institutions. Students can also earn a certificate at North.
Evergreen has accepted North’s new interdisciplinary degree as an “upside down” degree, meaning that students can transfer the subject area credits they earn at North to Evergreen, where they will complete their general education requirements. North is the only college in the Greater Seattle area that offers a program to prepare people to enter the media communication business.
The CB & M program was created with the ongoing cooperation and support of Seattle’s media leaders and their organizations. It blends instruction and internships in media management, marketing, sales, media production, and news production.
It is designed for professionals who want to reposition themselves in the marketplace and for students who want to start a career in the field. Students can prepare for such positions as account executive, research specialist, sales director, electronic journalist, art director, promotional coordinator, production manager, media buyer, on-air personality, copywriter, and media consultant. The program’s course of study includes internships to give students "real world" experience in their chosen field.
Students in the program can select from several courses in the areas of business and communication, with special emphasis on working in the broad field of media communication. In addition to business and communication offerings, the program also offers opportunities for students to learn and "do" through "practicum" courses, which usually are taught by people who are currently working in the field. In addition to providing the theoretical side, the instructors are able to draw from their practical and personal experiences for a "real world" look at the profession.
