NSCC gathering will focus on growing media jobs
Thursday, October 27th, 2005
Local media employers and specialists in worker education, training, re-training, and placement will confer November 10 on growing employment opportunities within the Seattle media market. The Thursday morning gathering is sponsored by North Seattle Community College’s Program in Communication, Business, and Media (CB&M).“This introductory session will focus on directly connecting media executives and employment specialists with prospective students through CB&M Partners. This is a mutually beneficial, interactive network we're establishing to recruit, mentor, and train students in our CB & M program -- and to subsequently place CB&M graduates in competitive positions within our partners' and other appropriate organizations.” said Bob Schuessler, program coordinator.
Started last year, Communication, Business, and Media prepares students for careers in media management, marketing, sales, media production, and news production.
The program's curriculum integrates a balance of studies and training for established and emerging media, including “on demand” formats and contents. In addition to courses taught by working media practitioners, CB&M students also make professional connections and get real world experiences through on-site internships and other off-campus projects. Schuessler describes the blend as a “hands-on, minds-on” approach.
CB&M was created and is coordinated with the ongoing participation and support of Seattle’s media leaders and their organizations and is the only program of its kind in the local region.
The November 10 breakfast and briefings will feature a variety of informative perspectives from participants including: Drina Turner, student; Ryan Craig, director, programming and research, UPN 11, KSTW TV and an instructor in the program; Mary Ellen O'Keeffe, executive dean, Workforce Training and professional/technical education at NSCC; Kurt Simmons, internship coordinator, NSCC; Cathy Valentine McKinney, executive director, Puget Sound Radio Broadcasters Association; Rob Dunlop, vice president / general manager - radio, Fisher Communications and the chair of the CB&M advisory board; Wanda Waldrop, career specialist, TRAC Associates, WorkSource North Seattle; and Ross Davis, general manger, SCC TV / IRIS , which is located at NSCC.
