Seattle’s ‘Poet Populist’ Teaches Here

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006

Among the English faculty at North is Pesha Gertler, who is this year's Seattle's Poet Populist.

She was recognized during Bumbershoot with a City Council proclamation read by Councilman Nick Licata, who also presented her with a $500 check on behalf of One Reel, the producers of Bumbershoot.

Pesha will spend the next year reading poetry at a variety of public events and venues with the intent of integrating literary arts into everyday civic life and bringing poetry to those who might not otherwise be exposed to it.

Pesha co-founded After Long Silence, a reading series at NSCC for women writers. The next reading is at 7:30 p.m. in the Rose Room at the college, 9600 College Way North, Seattle.

Her poetry has been published in Crab Creek Review, Calyx, and Bridges. Her poem, Sarah and Hagar, about Middle East peace, has been performed in Israel and Palestine.

More on Pesha and her activities can be found at through this Seattle Times article or through her web site.
