Check Out These Fresh Classes for Spring!

Spring brings new growth and new opportunities to learn at North. The new quarter offers several new classes from which to choose, and it is not too late to register!
Women’s Global Literature -- ENG 292 will focus on women’s writing from Africa and the Middle East. Taking ENG 292 with WMN/ISP 205 will satisfy the integrated studies requirement for students seeking a AA degree. Women in the Global Context -- WMN/ISP 205, Women in the Global Context, focuses on globalization, colonialism and nationalism, as well as the diverse roles that Muslim women in India and the Middle East have played in the international arena. Taking ENG 292 with WMN/ISP 205 will satisfy the integrated studies requirement for students seeking a AA degree. Theatrical Design -- Taught by a professional costume and lighting designer who has all over the United States, DRA 103 Fundamentals of Theatrical Design will explore the elements of design, creative process, and presentation that enter into costume, scenery, lighting, and art direction, etc.
Scientific Illustration -- The blending of art and science to create scientific illustrations will be a focus of ART 110, Practical Scientific Illustration. Students will learn how to render scientific concepts and objects via a variety of artistic methods, ranging from classical and tradition to electronic and digital.
Tennis -- Can't distinguish your forehand from your backhand? Do all your tennis strokes resemble lobs? If so, enroll in Beginning Tennis. Look for PEC 114 in the class schedule.
Natural Disasters -- How do sciences such as geology and meteorology identify, prepare for, and possibly mitigate various national disasters? These are a handful of the topics covered in this new science class, which satisfies the lab science requirement for the AA degree. Check out SCI 121.
Nanotechnology “Practicum” -- Here’s an opportunity to get “hands-on” training in a nano/micro-fabrication facility. Part of North’s new Nanotechnology program, this class requires certain prerequisites. Look for NANO 150 in the class schedule.
Psychological Research -- Required to for transfer into the Psychology major at many four-year universities (including UW), PSY 209, Fundamentals of Psychological Research, offers a hands-on approach to what is traditionally a large lecture course at large universities. You will learn the various methods used in psychology research, as well as learn how to read and understand a research study.
Digital Photography -- Light, design, self-expression, combined with computers, software, and output – those are some of the elements of Digital Photography II, which debuts this spring. ART 115, Fundamentals of Digital Photography requires students to have at least a 4-megabyte camera.
Relationships - What are the parallels between human beings and life in nature? Are there connections and similarities that are not always apparent or obvious to us? This and more will be explored in new 10 to 13-credit coordinated studies course, C1 Living Together: Relationships in the Natural and Human World. Other areas will include the challenges of immigration and introduced species, as well as the complexities of legislating ecology.
Critical Issues for the 20th Century -- HIS 200, Critical Issues for the 20th Century will focus on major contemporary issues and their historical roots, and will deal with global developments and perspectives on terrorism, decolonization, wars and peace initiatives, fundamentalism, migration, human trafficking, and other issues relevant to our world. This course meets the global studies requirement for the AA degree.
