Poignant Comedic Plays Open on Stage One in May

Monday, April 24th, 2006

Two poignant, comedic, and related one act plays by James McLure, Laundry and Bourbon and Lone Star, are being presented by the North Seattle Community College’s Stage One Theater in May Performances are planned for  May 19, 20, 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m.  Two Sunday matinees will be offered at 2 p.m. on May 21 and May 28. Admission is “pay as you can.” The theater is located in the Library Building at the college, 9600 College Way North.

The two plays will be performed in rotating repertory with the sequence of the plays changing every performance, according to David Tucker, Stage One director at the college.

Both plays take place in the small town of Maynard, Texas. Laundry and Bourbon occurs on the dusty front porch of Roy and Elizabeth’s house, whereas Lone Star comes to life in the cluttered backyard of a local bar. It is 1971 and Roy is a Vietnam War vet who has been back for two years. His adjustment back to his civilian life is not going as smoothly as either he or his wife Elizabeth had hoped. In Lone Star, Roy is in danger of losing those things he loves most, while Laundry and Bourbon focuses on the challenges Elizabeth must struggle with, despite her best friend Hattie’s support and neighbor Amy Lee’s meddling.

The New York Times hailed Lone Star as “an uproarious comedy with two bawdily rambunctious Texas brothers peppered with the playwright’s own special brand of cascading, spontaneous wit.”

The cast of Laundry and Bourbon and Lone Star features Maria Buzard, Ashley Harvey, Devon Meister, Samuel Nicholas, Rachael Risbell, and Dustin Wysong.  The creative team includes Robert Leigh, director; Dan Schuy, scenic and lighting designer and technical director; Carisa Bush, costume designer; Haley Gronbeck, stage manager; Russell Baird, assistant director; Cynthia Thompson, production assistant; and Tucker, producer.
