Former Student Wins CNN Heroes Award
Thursday, December 20th, 2007
Peter Kithene, a former student at NSCC and SCCC, was recently honored by CNN at its All-star Tribute awards program for his work providing vital healthcare services to western Kenyan villagers through a clinic he established two years ago. A native Kenyan himself, Kithene was orphaned at the aged of 12, also losing six of his siblings to an undiagnosed disease. Vowing to one day make life better for other rural Kenyans, he excelled at school, was accepted into a prestigious high school in Nairobi and then won a scholarship to study in the U.S. He is currently a graduate student in health administration at the University of Washington and plans to enter medical school following graduation. Kithene was chosen as one of six honorees out of 7,000 nominations sent in by CNN viewers in 93 countries. His Mama Maria Kenyan Clinic has served more than 18,000 patients who previously had no medical care. Future plans are to enlarge the clinic and to launch an HIV testing program.
