Broadcaster Receives Alumni Award

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

NSCC's Distinguished Alumni recognition for 2008 was recently awarded to M.J. McDermott, weather anchor on Q13 FOX News This Morning, for her academic achievement, professional accomplishments and community service.

Arriving in Seattle with a BA in Theater, Ms. McDermott worked as an actress in local theatre, television and radio. She also volunteered for various community organizations, while raising her twin boys. After earning 45 credits at NSCC with a 4.0 GPA, she transferred to a local university and earned a BS in Atmospheric Sciences. Her combined studies prepared her to become a TV news meteorologist, and she has become a role model for women pursuing math and science studies and enrolling in community college.

A member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Ms. McDermott has earned the Broadcast Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society. In 2006, she was the first woman and first TV meteorologist to win the U.W. Atmospheric Sciences Forecasting Competition. She has also been nominated for three local Emmy Awards for her work at Q13 FOX News. NSCC hosted her as a guest speaker at college commencement exercises on June 13th.

Says McDermott, "I wanted to be the ‘real deal' and get a degree in weather. I chose North Seattle Community College to get prerequisites under my belt and appreciated the flexible class schedule and excellent education I got there. I was well-prepared after my experience at North and really appreciate the place where I got started on this journey!" P
