Basketball Player Continues Study and Play at 4-yr
Friday, October 17th, 2008
North's Darnellia Russell is headed to Canada to continue her collegiate basketball career for Lakehead University. Russell was featured in The Heart of the Game, the award-winning basketball documentary that tells the story of the Roosevelt High School girl's basketball team. Russell turned out to be an unexpected focus of the story when she became a single mother and had to fight for her right to remain on the team.
After graduating high school, Russell came to North to pursue an associate's degree with a plan to transfer to a four-year college and attain her bachelor's degree. Along with her studies, she decided to play basketball for The Storm, The Seattle Community Colleges' basketball team. While playing for The Storm she was chosen as the MVP of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges all-star game. So, with her A.A. in hand, she heads to Canada to continue her studies and her basketball career. Russell expressed her excitement in an interview with GlobeSports.com, "I've been waiting for this. I've been waiting a long time for an opportunity to play basketball and get my degree." Both Russell and Storm teammate, Chiaki Nakamura, will start classes at Lakehead this fall.
