NSCC Signs Climate Commitment

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Over 200 faculty, staff and administrators participated in NSCC's President's Day on September 18th. The program was all about sustainability - one of the college's strategic directions and an area of special focus for the 2008-09 academic year. In addition to hearing from Alan Durning, well-known author of Stuff: The Secret Life of Everyday Things and national environmental leader, the event included President Ron LaFayette's signing of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment on behalf of the college. By participating in this program, the college has confirmed its commitment to initiating the development of a comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality, to initiating two or more tangible actions to reduce greenhouse gases while the more comprehensive plan is being developed, and to making the action plan and periodic progress reports publicly available.

North was the 581st college to make this climate pledge. The Presidents Climate Commitment builds on the growing momentum for leadership and action on climate change and provides a framework and support for America's colleges and universities to go climate neutral. The Commitment recognizes the unique responsibility that institutions of higher education have as role models for their communities and in training the people who will develop the social, economic and technological solutions to reverse global warming. NSCC is also one of only 17 organizations in King County participating in the Green Bike Project. This pilot project targets employees who live within cycling distance of work to reduce their SOV commute by 60% between now and May 2009. A total of 13 employees have made the pledge. If they reach their goal, they will keep the commuter cycle that REI is providing them or be included in a drawing for $1,000 in REI gift cards.
