Students and College Collaborate on Sustainability

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

NSCC's administration and student leaders recently announced a new partnership to accelerate the college's sustainability efforts for 2009-2010. Students for Sustainability, in conjunction with other campus stakeholders, has created a student-funded Sustainability Coordinator position and a separate Sustainability Fund.

The student sponsored part-time Sustainability Coordinator will facilitate sustainability initiatives and education on North's campus. Additional sustainability efforts will be advanced with the Sustainability Fund which is earmarked for sustainability projects such as an alternative energy lab, a think-tank for curriculum development, personal and professional development in the area of sustainability, and other action items that are approved by the student-based sustainability fee board.

Last fall, North Seattle Community College signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment. By participating in this program, the college has confirmed its commitment to initiating the development of a comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality.

However, due to state budget cutbacks, the college was challenged to fund new sustainability efforts for the 2009-10 fiscal year. During spring quarter 2009, Students for Sustainability worked with student leadership, the Student Fee Board, NSCC's administration and sustainability committee chair, the student Sustainability Club, and college faculty and staff, to create the needed staffing and supplemental funding. Thanks to the students of North Seattle Community College, the progress of sustainability development and education will continue to move forward.
