Wednesday, October 14th, 2009
On Tuesday, October 13th, North Seattle Community College hosted a groundbreaking on a new building that will house an innovative project designed to provide seamless employment and education services to the unemployed and underemployed in the Seattle area. The new building will bring together staff from the Department of Social and Health Services, Employment Security, WorkSource, the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County, and the state's community and technical colleges under one roof.
The all-in-one location will streamline services related to employment services, basic skills education, career training, unemployment insurance, food stamps, child support, transportation services, welfare, healthcare and other state aid.
Prior to the ceremonial "first shovel" at the construction site, project supporters Frank Chopp, Washington State Speaker of the House of Representatives as well as Representative Phyllis Gutierrez Kenney and Senator Ken Jacobsen, both from the 46th district, shared their visions for the new facility. Project leaders Marléna Sessions, CEO of the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County, Troy Hutson, Assistant Secretary of the DSHS Economic Services Administration, and Dot Fallihee, Area Director, Employment Security Department, talked about the collaboration with the college and other agencies and the some of the issues and opportunties co-location will bring. Dr. Jill Wakefield, Chancellor of Seattle Community College District and the district's Board of Trustees Chair, Don Root, commented on the project from the viewpoint of higher education.
