New Student Center Proposed

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

North Seattle Community College recently announced that it is considering construction of a Student Center. The center would provide a central gathering place on campus and would include a number of features such as a business center, convenience store, recreation center, student leadership offices, study areas, space for concerts and special events, etc.  The center is expected to create a hub of activity and promote a stronger sense of community. As described in a letter and brochure mailed to students in October, the center would be funded, in part, by an additional student fee which must be approved by the student body.

To determine whether students support an additional fee to help construct the center, the Student Administrative Council (student government) is conducting a student vote.  An e-mail with a link to the ballot was sent to students on November 6th.  Students have until midnight on November 20th to cast their vote.

If students approve an additional fee to construct the center, collection of the fee would begin in Winter Quarter 2010 and extend for twenty years.  The additional revenue would cover $6 million of the estimated $10 million cost. Student representatives would be involved in the design of the center.  Construction would begin in spring 2011 and be completed in late 2012.

Students are encouraged to vote by casting their ballot before midnight on November 20th.
