The North Seattle Community College Parent Education program offers a variety of options for students: cooperative preschools for parents of children, birth through age 5; an online parenting/working with children class, and a class on parenting school-aged children. These classes offer college credit. Cooperative PreschoolsThe cooperative preschool program is for both parents and children. Parents are involved in their child's early education experience by participating once a week in a parent-operated cooperative preschool where they learn about typical behavior, stages of development, and child-rearing techniques. Parents also attend evening parent classes, have the ability to gain skills in leadership and management though the operation of a self-supporting cooperative preschool program, and, in addition, meet and work with other parents with same aged children. A trained children's teacher plans and carries out developmentally appropriate learning experiences for the children. These classes are 3 credits. Parents pay a monthly/quarterly laboratory fee for the children's class and a $33.00 quarterly tuition to the college. For more information (locations, registration contacts, openings), visit the NSCC Cooperative Preschools website. Online Parenting Class An online class, FAM180 Special Topics, is available for parents and those who work with children. The class is 5 credits; tuition is $55.00 plus a technology fee of $37.15 for a total of $92.15. Topics change each quarter, influenced by student input. Past topics have included television, computers, discipline, violence, values, brain development, traditions, project approach/play, temperament, and attachment. This 11-week online class is designed to give students accessibility to obtaining parenting/working with children information. This course will also provide a forum to share questions with other registered parents, nannies, childcare providers, and the instructors teaching this class. Course goals are: to increase parenting/working with children skills; to present opportunities for interaction; to accumulate a virtual library of articles and web links; to provide a mechanism for meeting the unique needs individual students; and to be a vehicle to receive, share, and discuss parenting/working with children information. Traditional Parenting Class Parenting School-Aged Children is a 2-credit class where one joins with other parents of school-aged children for support, information, and selection of discussion topics. The class is led by Elizabeth Crary and costs $22.00. For further questions or to register, leave a message with the instructor at 206-367-6425. Class times are arranged each quarter depending on the needs of the students. Other parenting classes may also be available. For information about any of the above classes, you may contact the Health and Human Services Division. |
