What is the MCHS/ERC at Northgate ?
The Middle College High School /Education Resource Center (MCHS/ERC) is an alternative education joint venture between Seattle Public Schools and the Simon Youth Foundation. The MCHS/ERC addresses the academic needs of a high school student who is 16 years of age or older, wants a smaller more attentive high school experience, has 10 or more core curriculum (Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, US History and World History) high school credits, and can work independently in a self paced environment.

Q: Does MCHS/ERC provide jobs for its students?
A: MCHS/ERC offers a careers curriculum that is designed to teach students what it takes to succeed in today's work environment. The careers curriculum is for students who are looking to enter the work force immediately upon graduating from high school as well as students who want to pursue higher education. We do not provide jobs for students but we do help to develop employability skills such as resume development and interview skills.

Q: How old must a student be to attend MCHS/ERC?
A: Because MCHS/ERC/ERC is a 2-year academic program, we serve students who are 16 to 20 years old, and have 10 or more *core class credits. All students must earn enough credits to graduate before their 21st birthday.

Q: If a student has 5 or fewer credits, can he or she still attend MCHS/ERC?
A: We do not accept students with fewer than 10 *core class credits.

Q: Can a student graduate faster by attending MCHS/ERC?
A: Not necessarily. MCHS/ERC course work is designed to give the student a complete high school education in a self-paced, small group instruction environment. Because the student can work at their pace, the time that it will take to earn the required credits for graduation will depend on the student's own effort and the number of credits the student will need to graduate.

A: MCHS/ERC students can earn additional credit through the "Running Start Program". Q: How does a student apply for admission to MCHS/ERC?
A: First call MCHS/ERC and sign up for an interview. Secondly, when a prospective student comes for an interview, he or she must bring one official transcript from his or her current high school assignment, and one copy of their I.E.P. if he or she is a special education student. Without these documents, MCHS/ERC cannot consider the student for admission.
