Who is Eligible to Receive Services through Disability Services?
Disability Services (DS) provides services to students who are enrolled at NSCC. Academic accommodations, if reasonable and appropriate, are provided to students with a documented permanent or temporary physical, mental, or sensory disability. Students with disabilities are strongly encouraged to contact Disability Services if they have any type of disability that impacts their academic performance. There is no minimal or baseline disability that one must have to receive services. Support services are available for enrolled students and those planning to enroll.
What Type of Documentation is Needed to Qualify for Services?
Students who are seeking academic accommodations from Disability Services at NSCC must submit documentation to verify eligibility for services.
-
The first step in the process is to contact Disability Services to determine what type of documentation is needed for different types of disabilities. Disability Services has specific documentation requirements for different types of disabilities. The cost and responsibility for providing this documentation is borne by the student.
-
The provision of all reasonable accommodations and services is based upon the assessment of the current impact of the disability on academic performance. Since assessment constitutes the basis for determining reasonable accommodations, it is in a student's best interest to provide recent and appropriate documentation to serve as the basis for decision-making about a student's needs for accommodations in an academically competitive environment. Disability Services retains the right to require further documentation, if needed.
How Does a Student Request Services Through Disability Services?
Once a student has been admitted to the college, he or she should contact Disability Services to request an intake packet and to set up an intake appointment. Though an intake appointment can be set up at any time after the intake packet materials and documentation has been submitted by either new or current students, it should be done at least six weeks in advance of the need for accommodation, since some accommodations take time to coordinate.
It is the student's responsibility to request accommodations in a timely manner as accommodations are not offered retroactively. The purpose of the appointment is to discuss the student's disability-related needs and determine reasonable accommodations. The documentation of the disability must support any reasonable accommodations offered by Disability Services.
