Frequently Asked Questions

- Q: Can students check their email using Loft computers?
- A: Yes, but only if they are in The Loft to do school work, too. Students who just need to check email should instead visit one of the college's computer labs.

- Q: Do Loft tutors proofread and edit student writing?
- A: No. Loft tutors might proofread and edit a single paragraph, but only to show students how to perform this task. They will then ask the students themselves to try these skills.

- Q: Can students access Net ID accounts from Loft computers?
- A: Yes, Loft computers are PCs like those found in other campus computer labs. To use them, you'll need to have paid a Computer Lab (CL) fee at registration, or received permission from your instructor (ESL/ABE students only) to have this fee waived.

- A: Yes. Loft tutors are skilled at providing general reader response for any kind of writing project, for any subject. They will not always be able to answer questions specific to a student's discipline, but they can certainly help the student improve the writing.

- Q: Is The Loft there just for writing assistance?
- A: Loft tutors are good at helping students improve their writing, but they can also show students strategies for reading more critically, studying more productively, and taking class notes more effectively. Loft tutors are all experienced students themselves. Students of English as a Second Language (ESL) can also visit The Loft to practice reading, pronunciation, and general conversation.
