Self-Study Computers
The Loft's multimedia lab, equipped with 25 Gateway Profile 5.5 computers, offers a variety of language-learning programs to help students practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking at all learning levels. Our software is available on premises only (not available for checkout or home use). Students are welcome to use these programs during our regular business hours.

AZAR: Understanding English Grammar Interactive (Ask for CD-ROM)
Perfect for upper-level ESL students and really any student of English, this program features cartoon animation and spoken explanations; over 500 interactive exercises, with listening, speaking, and reading elements; and a comprehensive selection of useful, easy to understand grammar notes and charts.
ELLIS 3.0: Intro, Middle Mastery, Senior Mastery
With over 1,300 hours of instruction, ELLIS Academic 3.0 combines digital audio and video, voice recording, Role-play, and native language support to create an engaging, research-based environment for every level of English language training.
- Intro. These 35 lessons teach everyday English skills as students listen to, interact with, and learn from characters using natural English in real-life situations. Suitable for beginners from middle school to adult, this multimedia program uses contextual video and integrated tutorials in vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and communication. As they cover practical topics such as shopping, using public transportation and getting medical attention, students are consistently encouraged to immediately use what they are being taught.
- Middle Mastery. This level teaches solid grammar skills and cultural awareness to help intermediate learners move into advanced learning levels. ELLIS Middle Mastery presents hundreds of scenarios in its 25 lessons, ranging from shopping to casual social situations. Each scene helps learners become more comfortable with everyday English while they practice vocabulary, grammar, listening, and pronunciation at self-paced levels.
- Senior Mastery. ELLIS Senior Mastery is the multimedia program of choice for advanced learners and TOEFL preparation programs throughout the world. With 47 lessons and hundreds of hours of instruction, Senior Mastery offers activities and tests in vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, grammar, listening comprehension, and pronunciation. Designed for learners with prior exposure to English, the vast and sophisticated ELLIS Senior Mastery not only facilitates communicative fluency, but aids in TOEFL preparation as well.
Live Action English
Very easy to use for teachers and students, Live Action English Interactive is for beginner to intermediate learners of English. It consists of 21 units which present vocabulary and grammar in the context of familiar activities. Each activity offers a series of exercises: students watch a video, check comprehension, interact with the video, and read and write.
New Oxford Picture Dictionary (Ask for CD-ROM)
Designed to complement the text version of the New Oxford Picture Dictionary, this CD-ROM program, good for beginner to intermediate English students, provides over 2,400 words in spoken and written form, divided into 13 themes from everyday life. Students interact with the program's content to improve comprehension and pronunciation. Tests and games make this work fun and engaging.
Oxford Picture Dictionary Interactive (ask for CD-ROM)
This interactive, multimedia CD-ROM brings the words and illustrations of The Oxford Picture Dictionary to life with sound and animation. Its rich assortment of games, exercises, and activities makes it flexible for use in conjunction with the Dictionary or on its own. Each content theme contains subjects, with a strong job-skills emphasis, that ESL students will find useful both in life and in the classroom. This program can be adapted to individual, pair, or small group work.
Pronunciation Power 2
Designed for intermediate and advanced ESL students, Pronunciation Power presents the 52 sounds necessary to speak clear English. Animated side and front views of the mouth and tongue help students learn to form English sounds correctly. Students can see and listen to words and sentences and then record their own voices for comparison. Interactive exercises are included.
Reading/Critical Thinking

Merit Reading: Developing Critical Thinking Skills
Students receive hands-on practice in using reading improvement strategies that sharpen their critical thinking skills and develop their ability to make inferences. Assessments place students in appropriate units of instruction. Students advance as they demonstrate readiness. Students in ENGL095/096 and ENGL097/098 will find this program to be great practice for the reading their teachers assign them.
SkillsBank5: Reading Module
Intermediate-level students can brush up on key reading fundamentals with self-paced instruction covering vocabulary, Latin roots, compound words, word usage, and reading comprehension. Highly recommended as a supplemental resource for students in ENGL095/096 and ENGL097/098.
Writing/Grammar

Focus on Grammar: Basic, Intermediate, High-Intermediate, Advanced
This four-part series provides extensive grammar practice through a variety of reading, writing, and listening activities.
- Basic. Includes exercises on the verb to be, nouns, adjectives, prepositions, questions, imperatives, modals, comparisons, superlatives, and present progressive, simple present, simple past, and past progressive tense.
- Intermediate. Includes more work with present, past, future, and present perfect tense as well as adjectives, adverbs, gerunds, infinitives, modals, and articles.
- High Intermediate. Focus on Grammar presents a review of present, past, and future tense, tag questions, gerunds and infinitives, passive voice, modals, conditionals, adjective clauses, embedded questions, pronouns, and phrasal verbs.
- Advanced. Includes verb phrases, noun phrases, passive voice, gerunds, infinitives, adverbials, adjective clauses, noun clauses, and unreal conditions.
Inspiration
This brainstorming software allows students to use mind-mapping and clustering techniques to begin the writing process. The software will change a pictorial diagram of the clustering into a linear outline and is especially useful for students with writer's block or writing anxiety. Students can also incorporate photos, hand-drawings, and other graphics into these diagrams to enhance their appearance for both personal use and public presentation.
Merit Writing: Essay Punch
This program helps students already familiar with writing a paragraph begin to write a short essay. Students learn the techniques of expository writing, to persuade, inform, or describe. Choosing from a menu of topics, students are guided to develop an idea and write their own short essay. Steps to finished essays include pre-writing, outlining, organizing, revising, rewriting, and publishing.
SkillsBank5: Writing Module
Students in advanced ESL and developmental English classes will find this program helpful for work on grammar, punctuation, or spelling. Included are sections on the identification of subjects and verbs, subject/verb agreement, sentence fragments, and adjective, adverb, and pronoun use.
Writer's Reference 5th Edition, Diana Hacker
This complete writer's handbook should answer any English writing question a student could have. It's easy to navigate, and offers scores of exercises and charts that students can print out. Students will also find sections on all the major research citation methods: MLA, APA, and Chicago.
Writer's Resources
This interactive multimedia program is designed to equip educators and students with the tools they need to improve their writing skills. Students can explore three different sections, Skills, Writing Elements, and Rhetorical Patterns. This program is packed with examples, explanations, and practice units, in the writing areas a student is likely to focus on.
World Languages

Puntos de partida: An Invitation to Spanish, 7th Edition (Ask for CD-ROM)
An interactive Spanish language program that helps students practice vocabulary, reading, pronunciation, and grammar. The program's content puts an emphasis on the "meaningful use of Spanish," and provides a positive portrayal of contemporary Hispanic cultures. This CD-ROM is designed to complement the 7th Edition Puntos de partida textbook.

All The Right Type uses a classroom-tested methodology to develop keyboarding skills. Realistic posture and finger positions demonstrate correct fingering. Printable awards, fireworks, and an optional game build motivation.
Great Speeches of the 20th Century (Ask for CD-ROM)
This is an audio-only collection of the best English language speeches of the 20th century. Each speech has been edited to include the most memorable and noteworthy segments. The four-CD series is intended to be used as a research tool, but it can also be used to improve listening skills. Best for students at ENG 097/098 and above.
