Tutors

Who are the Loft tutors?
Loft tutors all have a passion for education. Most have bachelor's degrees, some have master's, others are students themselves, both graduate and undergraduate. Sometimes a Loft tutor is also a teacher at NSCC.
Students can work with tutors in one-to-one sessions, or in small study groups. This service is free to all enrolled students with an NSCC ID card.

One-to-One Tutoring
Students can visit with Loft tutors to practice their skills and deepen their knowledge in writing, reading, speaking, and listening. These tutoring sessions last typically thirty minutes. During times of low student traffic in The Loft, tutors and students can agree to work together for a full hour.

Small Group Tutoring
Students may ask to hold tutor-led study groups not only to practice conversation, pronunciation, and other basic language skills, but also to plan English writing assignments, review grammar concepts, experiment with sentence-writing, or dabble in any other English skill under the sun. Specialized Loft Workshops can also be arranged. Students can ask the Loft director for details.

Requesting a Tutor
All Loft tutoring sessions, both one-to-one and small group, are conducted on a drop-in basis. No appointments are necessary or accepted. (Exceptions to this practice are made for study groups who arrange with the Loft director to visit on a regular schedule.) Students arrive, check in at the reception desk, sign in, and wait for the next available tutor. During busy periods, students may have to wait as long as 20 minutes, during which they can use Loft computers or work on their school assignments.

World Languages Tutoring
World language teachers and peer tutors hold sessions in The Loft. A schedule of their availability is posted each quarter by the Loft entrance. World language tutors visit their students on both an appointment and a drop-in basis. World language students should ask their particular tutor about what arrangements they can make.
