Here are a few select organizations and directories that provide social services and support for women and men in the Seattle area. For additional help, please contact the Women's Center.

    This comprehensive guide to services in Washington State provides contact and descriptive information for assistance programs that address: basic needs, legal issues, safety, mental health, medical health, and many other social services.     This online guide offers information about city programs and resources, including: non-English language information for the city of Seattle, technology, education, human services, public health, recreation, and more.

Child Care

  • Seattle Milk Fund

    Charitable organization supporting parents in selected schools with education and child care grants on a quarterly basis. Family Assistance funds are also available in the form of shoe vouchers or backpack grants. Milk Fund applications are available at the Financial Aid office and the Women's Center and are due approximately 1 month before the start of each quarter.

    To be eligible for help paying for child care, you must be employed or in a job training program, you and your family must live within the city limits of Seattle, have children under 13, meet family income guidelines, and must not be eligible for any other subsidy program.

Housing, Rent & Utility Assistance

  • Solid Ground

    Solid Ground (formerly Fremont Public Association) offers a variety of services including: financial skills education, homebuyer education, mortgage default and reverse mortgage counseling, home repair, tenant counseling, and move in or eviction assistance. This agency also partners with other organizations to provide food assistance, transportation, communication, and services for the elderly or disabled. Please describe your specific need to someone on the main line for routing to individual programs.

  • Catholic Community Services

    CCS provides comprehensive and critical human services to thousands of children, families, and elders throughout Washington State. Some services include: emergency services, housing, counseling, and child care.

  • Central Area Motivation Project (CAMP) and Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

    CAMP assists low-income families in obtaining, conserving, and maintaining adequate heat and electricity. Programs help households: make home heating more affordable, avoid shutoff of utility services during the winter, and maintain a warm and safe environment for the elderly, the disabled, and households with young children under six.

  • City of Seattle's Rate 27 Utility discount program

    Applicants must have a utility bill in their name, meet low income guidelines, and may not be a resident of federally subsidized housing.

    Community Legal Services promotes social justice by providing civil (non-criminal) legal services to primarily low-income residents of King County who would not otherwise receive legal assistance. KCBA also offers a variety of free neighborhood legal clinics with 30 minutes of free legal advice and consultation.

    Women and men are welcome to call if they have a legal question or problem and live in Washington State. Law Center volunteer attorneys, paralegals, and law students will try to answer your questions and direct you to resources that will be helpful. NWWLC only represents clients in visible, public impact cases. This is a high volume line so leave a message if instructed.

  • Northwest Justice Project's Coordinated Legal Education, Advice, and Referral System (CLEAR)

    CLEAR is Northwest Justice Project's toll-free telephone service for eligible low-income people to obtain free legal assistance with civil legal problems. Staff will ask questions about your legal and financial situation and may give you verbal or written legal advice, or a referral to a legal provider.

  • Refugee Women's Alliance

    Refugee Women's Alliance is a multi-ethnic organization providing advocacy, education, and support services for refugee and immigrant women and their families.

  • Domestic Abuse Women's Network (DAWN)

    Provides services to victims of domestic violence in South King County. Services include: 24 hour crisis line, client advocacy, support groups, legal advocacy, children's programs, confidential shelter, extended stay program, education, and outreach.

  • Eastside Domestic Violence Program

    The largest provider of services for domestic violence victims in Washington. EDVP operates 2 confidential shelters, offers additional safe housing in the community, runs support groups for women and children, provides extensive community education and trainings, and advocates on behalf of victims.

Health Care & Clinics

  • Basic Health

    Basic Health offers state residents low premiums based on income and enrollment in well-known medical plans. Low-cost health care coverage for Washington State residents who are within income guidelines, not eligible for free or purchased Medicare, not institutionalized at the time of enrollment, and not attending school on a temporary student visa.

  • Puget Sound Neighborhood Health Centers: 45th Street Clinic

    Services include: general medicine, women's health care, family planning, dental care, pediatrics, and immunizations. Referrals for substance abuse treatment, shelter/housing, and homeless programs for children and adults. Medical coupons and insurance accepted; sliding fee scale also available. Staff speak over 16 different languages.

  • Community Health Access Program (CHAP)

    Program helping families & individuals access culturally appropriate health care and social services, regardless of their ability to pay. CHAP helps people find affordable health care or insurance, health-screening services, medical or dental clinics with sliding fees, support services, and prenatal care.

  • YWCA Women's Health Outreach Program

    YWCA Women's Health Outreach links women to culturally appropriate women's health care including: free or low-cost mammograms, pap tests and breast exams, referrals to quality women's health care at local community health clinics, outreach to low-income and medically under-served populations specifically in the African-American, Lesbian/Bisexual, Russian/Ukrainian and Latina communities.

    Culturally appropriate primary and preventative care including: general medicine, HIV care and case management, on-site pharmacy, prenatal and pregnancy care, and senior services. Insurance and medical coupons accepted, but no one will be turned away because of inability to pay.

    Reproductive health services for women including: abortion services, donor insemination, annual exams, pap smears, contraceptive management, treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, and menopause and peri-menopausal care.

  • Planned Parenthood

    Multiple locations in western Washington offering: birth control, emergency contraception, annual exams, treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, and help with related medical needs. Some fees may be discounted based on income.

  • Take Charge

    Free birth control methods and family planning for people without insurance or whose insurance does not cover contraceptive services. Teens may apply without their parent's involvement.

  • Verbena Health

    Direct client services to the LGBTQ community including: free tobacco cessation classes, health screenings, and support groups. All programs are offered free or sliding scale because economic status should not be a barrier to health and wellness. Most programs are open to all individuals, allies included, except where the subject matter is highly sensitive.

    Promotes the health and well being of LGBTQ persons, their families, and friends through support, education, and advocacy. Services include: support meetings, helpline, and lending library.
