Underage students: North Seattle Community College operates on an open door admissions policy. Consistent with available space and resources, NSCC admits those persons who are eighteen years of age or older; or are high school graduates with the following exceptions. The College does not desire to replace or duplicate the functions of the local public schools; however, persons may request special admission on a course-by-course basis. Criteria for granting admission are: competency at an appropriate academic, artistic, and/or technical talent level and the ability to participate in an adult learning environment. Students who are not enrolled in a student enrollment option such as those listed below, are required to complete the Underage Exception to Policy Application.

The only exceptions would be students enrolling in the following programs:

Career Link: North Seattle Community College offers a unique educational program for young people 16-21 years old who have left high school without graduating. If you want to apply to Career Link, visit the Career Link website.

Running Start: The Running Start Program provides academically motivated juniors and seniors in high school an opportunity to take college-level courses for credit. If you want to apply to Running Start, visit the Running Start website.

Underage Exception to Policy Application:
All students who do not fall under the above listed programs are required to complete the following steps each quarter prior to being considered for an admissions exception:
  1. Complete a North Seattle Community College Admissions Application Form online or in person. You will be given a Student Identification Number in order to take the placement test(s). Keep all other required information (below) together until you meet with the underage advisor as part of step 8.

  2. Complete the Underage Application Form (PDF 41KB).

After the forms are completed, you will need your SID Number in order to take the Placement Test(s). Keep all other required information (below) together until you meet with the underage advisor as part of step 8 below.

  3. Call or go to the Testing Center and make arrangements to take an English placement test. If you are planning to take a math class, a math placement test will also be required.

  4. Obtain an unofficial transcript from your high school.

  5. Write a letter explaining, in detail, the reason for requesting permission to be admitted as an underage student.

    1. If you are planning to earn your high school diploma from your current high school, your high school counselor or designee must provide a statement indicating the recommended college class(es) and reasons for the recommendation(s). If you are home schooled, have the Home School Resource Office provide the statement of recommendation.

    2. Students planning to earn a high school diploma from NSCC must obtain a written release to attend NSCC from the Student Placement Office of Seattle Public Schools (or if not within Seattle Public Schools area, then from your high school principal).

  6. Have your parent or legal guardian write a letter of support indicating why and how the student may benefit from the college experience as an underage student.

  7. Make an appointment to meet with the underage advisor.
