Stellar Performance for Women at NWAACC Tournament

Your Seattle Community College Women's Team took the 5th place trophy at the NWAACC tournament defeating The Everett CC women's team 80- 50! It was their third consecutive victory after an opening round defeat by Yakima Valley College. Leading the Storm was 6-0 sophomore forward from Central Kitsap High School, Kayla Bennett. Bennett was named to the first team All-Tournament team. Candace Grettenberger, a 5-10 freshman from Bremerton HS contributed 14 points along with a game high 10 rebounds. Sherika Puckett, a 6-2 frosh center from Ingraham HS scored 11 points and 5-8 sophomore guard, Chiaki Nakamura, an international student from Japan who attends South Seattle CC added 10 points connecting on back to back long range 3 pointers that brought the crowd to their feet. Sophmore captain Kelly Luke, a solid guard from Cedar Park Christian HS (Bothell) played the perfect game shooting 1-1 from three point land and 2-2 from the free throw line for 5 points and 3 assist as she blew through the Everett press creating easy baskets early for the Storm.

Seattle Sends Bellevue Home

On Saturday morning, in a loser out battle, the Storm fought out a win over league rival Bellevue CC 58-57 to continue play in the trophy round and send Bellevue home packing. Leading by as many as 12 points late in the game, the Storm needed big plays and defense to put the game away. Kayla Bennett once again led the Storm in scoring with 19 points. Bennett was aided by the 15 points of 5-7 freshman guard, Katie Kirsch, from Kennedy HS in Burien, who's 3 three-pointers faltered each Bellevue comeback with her deadly shooting. Candace Grettenberger contributed 12 rebounds, and Hiroe Chiba, a 5-5 freshman guard from Japan dished out a game high 8 assists.

On Friday morning, the Storm defeated Grays Harbor College (Aberdeen) 99-46. The Storm were led in scoring by Kayla Bennett with 23 points, Sherika Puckett's 20 points, 16 points from Chiaki Nakamura, and 10 points from Hiroe Chiba. 5-11 freshman forward, Amber Hering, from Ballard HS, contributed 12 rebounds.

It was a great journey to the NWAACC tourney, and a wonderful way to end the season! Congratulations to Head Coach, Rebecca Valdivia and her assistant coaches Kadee Peterson and Glen "ICE" Tinned. They represented the Seattle Community Colleges with their competitiveness, their intensity, and their passion in a very classy manner!!
